Who is eligible?
ECLIPSE is an exclusive professional development opportunity for early career members. Members who have served 3-10 years in the workforce (industry or academia) are eligible to apply.
ASME believes that early career engineers can make significant contributions to the Society and is eager to encourage their participation in all levels of leadership. Program objectives include:
- Placement of early career engineers in highly visible and productive roles within ASME.
- Mentoring by high-level ASME volunteers.
- Significant contributions by early career engineers to sectors/boards/committees.
- Continuing leadership training and volunteer tracking.
What are the steps following application submission?
ECLIPSE is a competitive leadership development program. Following the application process, candidates will be notified of the status of their applications by late January. The ECLIPSE Intern Program Committee reviews incoming applications for a limited number of positions.
Participants attend the Annual Meeting in June, and the International ME Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in November, as well as a second Annual Meeting the following June. At the conclusion of the program period at the second Annual Meeting, ECLIPSE participants are assisted in identifying opportunities for continued participation in ASME. Throughout their term, participants also receive special leadership training, offered in conjunction with ASME"s Volunteer Orientation and Leadership Training (VOLT) Academy. The following is a timeline of anticipated events in the ECLIPSE Program:
- December - January - Application review and selection
- February - Notification of Internship award/non-award
- April - Orientation and leadership workshop for interns
- June - Travel to first ASME Annual Meeting
- November - Travel to the International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Expo (IMECE)
- June - Travel to second ASME Annual Meeting
- Other meetings/travel depending on funding and unit served.
What to expect as an ECLIPSE participant?
ECLIPSE participants are matched with a specific ASME unit for a period of one year and work closely with an assigned coach to complete one or more projects throughout the year.
Participants also travel to several meetings and networking engagements of approximately three days’ duration throughout the program period. These are unique opportunities to pursue career-advancing training opportunities, meet diverse leaders and members from around the world and identify opportunities for future engagement and leadership within the society.
The cost of attending meetings will be covered by ASME in accordance with Society Policy P-4.5: reasonable transportation costs to attend pre-approved meetings are eligible for reimbursement, as are lodging and meal expenses up to a 175 per day per diem (except as noted in Society Policy P-4.5) All expense reimbursements are subject to budget limitations. ASME encourages cost sharing of these expenses with the interns’ employers.
Applicants residing outside the United States must submit a copy of a US Visa valid for a minimum of 18 months or a passport valid for entry into the US with the application. Please visit for the Visa Waiver Program list of eligible countries.
ASME Areas for Internship Placement:
Interns are assigned to units throughout the Society, including the Board of Governors, the VOLT Academy, and a range of sectors, committees, and groups, depending on the Society’s needs and the interns’ interests and backgrounds.
