What’s New

ASME Issues First Bioprocessing Equipment Program Certificate

The recently launched ASME Bioprocessing Equipment Certification program offers certification services for organizations manufacturing or supplying tubing and fittings falling under the scope of the ASME BPE Standard for Bioprocessing Equipment. United Industries, headquartered in Beloit, WI, was the first organization to successfully complete the ASME BPE certification audit and was presented with the first ASME BPE certificate on January 15, 2013.

For more information visit the BPE Certification webite or contact Joseph Pang, P.E. (+1.212.591.8525).

ASME Issues Guidance Document on Mobile Crane Standards

In an effort to assist manufacturers, owners, users, and safety officials involved with mobile cranes, ASME has developed a guidance document to help determine which standards should be invoked for a particular application or facility. The guide identifies various U.S. federal, state and local laws, national and industry consensus standards, international standards, and other documents with provisions specific to mobile cranes.

For more information visit the ASME website or contact Kate Hyam, P.E. (+1.646.957.1358).

New ASME Standard on Lift Planning Out for Public Review

As load handling activities grow in complexity, there is an increased need to develop a set of recognized planning guidelines. While some guidance for planning of load handling activities (also referred to as lift planning) is contained in literature from equipment manufacturers and in-house procedures of various organizations, the absence of uniform considerations or comprehensive practices has created an uneven range of planning activities.

ASME's P30 Standard Committee, Planning for the Use of Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Cableways, Aerial Devices and Lifting Accessories held its inaugural meeting in September 2010 with the intent to develop a standard that provides guidance on general planning considerations and practices for load handling operations occurring in all industries, so that users could apply the standard as a template and adapt it to the needs of their specific industry or situations.

The committee-approved P30.1 Planning for Load Handling Activities standard is currently out for public review and comment until February 26, 2013; for information on submitting comments visit the Public Review page on the ASME website.

ASME Elevator Code to Address Wind Turbine Tower Elevators

Responding to an increased need for guidance on elevators used in enclosed wind turbine towers, ASME has developed prescriptive criteria for elevators used to service, maintain, and inspect wind turbine equipment. While ASME's previously established performance- based approach for the design of wind turbine tower elevators will remain in place, the new prescriptive provisions may better serve designers, manufacturers, contractors, and operators of wind turbine tower elevators by providing added confidence and consistency in the design and operation of such equipment.

It is anticipated the new provisions will be included with the next edition of the A17.1/B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, currently scheduled to be published in November 2013.

Dates and Venue Set for 2nd Annual ASME Verification and Validation Symposium

Building off the success of its first symposium, the second large-scale symposium dedicated entirely to the emerging field of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification of computer simulations will be held on May 22-24, 2013 in Las Vegas. Over 170 subject matter experts will provide their perspectives on 13 different technical tracks.

The ASME V&V Symposium presents an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with engineers and scientists from all disciplines that use computational modeling and simulation, methods for verification of codes and solutions, simulation validation, and assessment of uncertainties in mathematical models, computational solutions, and experimental data.

Several ASME V&V standards development committees will also hold meetings on May 20-21, and all are invited to attend.

For more information visit the symposium website or contact Ryan Crane, P.E. (+1.212.591.7004).

Energy Spotlight

ASME Publishes Concentrating Solar Power Standards Gap Analysis

Concentrated solar power (CSP) facilities have been in successful commercial operation for the past 25 years. Recently, however, government incentives and advances in cost reduction have brought many new players into the field and opportunities for accelerated deployment are being seen worldwide.

Since many of the developing technologies in CSP have failure modes and effects different from those treated by existing boiler and pressure vessel standards, a study was needed to identify differences and gaps between the safety regulation needs of emerging CSP technologies and existing ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel codes. The gap analysis looks at six leading CSP technologies, identifies safety-related failure modes for each, and compares them with existing code rules to identify gaps and recommend actions to close them.

Energy Forum to Explore State of Energy Sources and Related Technologies

ASME Energy Forum is a new, year-long multi-media series that explores the technical aspects of a renewable and alternative energy sources and related technologies — including relevant standards. From solar to wave, from wind farms to waste, from hydrogen fuel cells to hydraulic fracturing, the Energy Forum series provides engineers, industry professionals, and policymakers with information on what they need to know today — how energy sources work; technical issues and challenges; and the economic implications. The Energy Forum series offers insight and perspective from top energy experts in an engaging, multi-media approach that includes live webinars, articles, profiles, podcasts and interactive schematics. This year-long campaign kicked off in February 2013 with an initial spotlight on Hydrokinetics. In March, the spotlight webinar will be on Concentrated Solar Power. There is no cost to participate in the webinar, however, registration is required.
