What’s New

ASME Involvement in the Mobile Unmanned Systems

On September 28, 2017, ASME will continue its mobile unmanned systems standards development activities by attending the kick-off meeting of the American National Standards Institute(ANSI) Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Standardization Collaborative (UASSC). The UASSC will work on coordinating the development of standards and conformity assessment programs associated to UAS, commonly known as drones. ASME contributed in the May 19 ANSI meeting that established the collaborative. As part of ASME’s activities in this area, the Council on Standards and Certification approved initiating activities related to unmanned systems by authorizing the development of standards on “Application of Mobile Unmanned Systems (MUS) for inspections, monitoring, and maintenance of industrial facilities and power plants as well as equipment, transmission lines, and pipelines.”

In addition, the Board on Standardization and Testing has established a Special Working Group on the Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles/Systems (UAVs/UASs) for Inspection. The working group held its most recent meeting on August 7, 2017 during Boiler Code Week to discuss the current and emerging uses of (UAVs/UASs) for inspections of plants such as power plants, petrochemical plants, and manufacturing facilities.

ASME is currently soliciting subject matter experts and affected stakeholders to help support these efforts.

For more information, contact Claire Ramspeck (+1.212.591.8731).

ASME Symposium on Elevated Temperature Applications of Materials for Fossil, Nuclear, and Petrochemical Industries

On April 2-6, 2018, ASME will host the Elevated Temperature Application of Materials Symposium in Seattle, WA. This symposium will provide a unique opportunity for those involved in the fossil, nuclear, and petrochemical industries, standards development organizations and government, and those interested members of the public to come together for a professional exchange of information. The focus will be on how best to develop new and/or revise and upgrade current design, fabrication and construction practices of pressure equipment such as boilers, pressure vessels and piping components that will operate at elevated temperatures where materials will be subject to creep, creep-fatigue, embrittlement, and environmental effects. Abstracts are currently being accepted through September 29, 2017.

For more information on the Elevated Temperature Applications of Materials Symposium, contact Colleen O’Brien (+1.212.591.7881).

Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards Project Team on Evaluation of Additive Manufacturing for Pressure Retaining Equipment Redesignated

On August 9, 2017 in Minneapolis, MN, the newly redesignated ASME Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards (BPTCS)/ Board on Nuclear Codes and Standards (BNCS) Special Committee on Use of Additive Manufacturing for Pressure Retaining Equipment held its first meeting during ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Week. The task of the special committee is to develop a technical baseline to support development of a proposed BPTCS standard or guideline addressing the pressure integrity governing the construction of pressure retaining equipment by additive manufacturing processes. The committee will initially develop a task plan for development of a technical baseline for data supporting a standard for additive manufacturing.

ASME is currently soliciting subject matter experts and affected stakeholders to help support these efforts.

For more information, contact Richard Lucas (+1.212.591.7541).

Ongoing Development of Model-Based Enterprise Standards Activities

Since the April 2017 Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) Summit hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a teleconference was held under the guidance of the Board on Standardization and Testing to plan the establishment of a new committee to develop standards for the creation and use of model-based datasets, data models, and related topics with a MBE. The proposed committee area of concentration would include: types of models and their intended uses; rules for representing requirements and constraints; types of features and data elements for model‐based datasets; schemas for datasets; creating, managing and using product definition and process definition data; managing links between product definition and process definition; rules governing data quality; managing discrepancies (between existing standards, data format standards, and other standards that affect Model‐Based Definition (MBD) and MBE).

ASME is currently soliciting subject matter experts and affected stakeholders to help support these efforts.

GLOBAL OUTREACH

Nuclear Standards Development and International Working Group Meetings In Argentina

On October 5, 2017 in Bariloche, Argentina, the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Standards Committee III Construction Of Nuclear Facility Components Argentina International Working Group (IWG) and BPVC Standards Committee XI Nuclear Inspection Argentina IWG will meet at the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) offices. In addition to IWG committee meetings, a panel session or roundtable discussions will also be setup to address questions as a part of ASME’s continued support of Argentina’s development of draft regulations for boilers and pressure vessels. ASME staff, Oliver Martinez, and BPVC III Chair, Ralph Hill, will also be present to address questions and help administer the meetings.
