New York City Cranes Safety Report Recommends Reference to ASME B30 Standards

Following the February 5, 2016 crane collapse in Tribeca, New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio established the Crane Technical Working Group to investigate the accident and develop safety recommendations. On June 10, 2016, the technical working group released an interim report which contained 23 recommendations, in which one was to adopt relevant ASME standards for cranes and rigging, the B30 standards. Adoption of ASME standards for cranes was also recommended by the High Risk Construction Oversight Study.

ASME is committed to working with jurisdictions overseeing crane safety all across the country, along with other stakeholders to ensure that our B30 crane safety standards meet the needs of all parties. The ASME B30 standards are developed by expert volunteers through a recognized consensus development process that considers the input of all relevant stakeholders. In addition, the B30 Regulatory Authority Council allows local, state, and national government entities to provide direct input into the B30 standards development process.

Subject Matter Experts Wanted for ASME’s Advanced Manufacturing Standards Committee

Based on discussions that took place between numerous stakeholders, including the United States Department of Defense and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Board on Standardization and Testing is currently working on a proposal to form a new Standards Committee on Advanced Manufacturing. The new standards committee would look into development of standards that define which data is required in a 3D data set; define how a CAD/CAM 3D model and its associated technical data should be structured;  enable enhancement of maintenance and control strategies within manufacturing operations at the factory-floor; and explore other issues as they evolve.

This effort reflects a growing interest among standards development committees to advance new manufacturing technologies and methods. ASME is currently soliciting subject matter experts and affected stakeholders to help support these efforts.

Commemorations Planned for 100th Anniversary of B30 Crane Standards

2016 will mark the 100-year anniversary of ASME's B30 Safety Standard for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks, and Slings. A special reception is being planned for the B30 meetings taking place in Clearwater, FL, from September 18-22, 2016.

GLOBAL OUTREACH

ASME to Conduct Certification 360 Workshop in Italy

ASME will be hosting a Certification 360 Workshop in Bergamo, Italy on September 26-27, 2016. This workshop is an opportunity for the certification community to gain insight into the policies and procedures of ASME’s Certification and Accreditation Programs, including its widely adopted boiler and pressure vessel product certification program. The workshop is also a forum where high-profile topics related to design, fabrication, and stamping of code items will be discussed. Similar workshops have been hosted by ASME in Shanghai, China in April 2016 and in Columbus, Ohio in August 2016.

For more information about this and future ASME Certification 360 Workshops, contact CA@asme.org.

ASME A17 Elevator and Escalator Standards Involvement in China

From May 10-13, 2016, ASME in collaboration with the China Elevator Association (CEA), organized exhibitions and presentations at the World Elevator and Escalator Expo in Shanghai, China. In addition, an Institute of Special Equipment Inspection & Technical Research (SSEI) workshop was held with the A17 Standards Committee Chair, Henry E. Peelle, III and a committee expert, Patrick Bothwell making technical presentations on the basis of the A17 Code.

Through participation in these activities, it is hoped that the Chinese elevator industry learns more about ASME standards as well as to promote additional participation and interaction. Currently, the A17 series has been translated into Chinese by the China Special Equipment and Inspection Research Institute (CSEI).
