What’s New

ASME Extends Relationship with China Special Equipment Inspection and Research Institute (CSEI)

Reflecting the sustained and far-reaching interest in its standards, ASME has revised and extended a license agreement with the China Special Equipment Inspection and Research Institute (CSEI). Signed on October 13, 2015 by ASME Executive Director Tom Loughlin and CSEI President Lin Shu Quin in a ceremony at ASME’s New York headquarters the license will allow CSEI to continue to translate and distribute the ASME A17 series of standards including QEI-1.
In addition, on October 12, 2015, ASME welcomed two associates from CSEI. The individuals, Mr. Chen Zhiwei (Senior Engineer) and Mr. Wang Haoyang (Engineer), are participating in a three month program to provide a comprehensive background in ASME’s Standards & Certification activities, including orientations on technical and programmatic areas of focus, participation at key events, and the opportunity to meet with representatives from other relevant stakeholder groups.
This reflects the latest in a series of collaborations between ASME and CSEI, which include;

  • Demonstrating the role of ASME Conformity Assessment and Standards play in promoting safety and standardization
  • Communicating the value of participating in ASME standards development
  • Making ASME standards related training more available and more relevant to local needs

The collaborations are undertaken in order to greater the understanding and acceptance of standards and certification and support ASME’s overall mission.

U.S.-China Boiler Energy Efficiency Standards Collaboration

On September 14, 2015, ASME participated on a U.S.-China Boiler Energy Efficiency Standards Collaboration Workshop in Beijing, China. The workshop focused on strengthening mutual understanding and providing practical learning experiences in developing industrial boiler efficiency standards. Organizers and supporters included: General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), National Development and Reform Committee (NDRC), China Promotion Association for Special Equipment Safety and Energy-Saving (CPASE), China Special Equipment Inspection and Research Institute (CSEI), China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS), Shanghai Industrial Boiler Research Institute (SIBRI), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Future efforts will include identification of gaps and potential collaborative efforts for standards development.

On October 23, 2015, ASME participated at the 6th U.S.‐China Energy Efficiency Forum at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington DC. The forum was hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in partnership with China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). Over 200 leading stakeholders convened to assess current collaboration on energy efficiency policy and programs and identify emerging opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration and partnerships.

ASME to Build on Success of International Working Groups (IWG) in Mexico, Caribbean, and Latin America

On December 9, 2015, ASME will meet with prospective subject matter experts from Argentina to investigate the formation of new Nuclear International Working Groups in new construction, inspection, and operation and maintenance. Established as a mechanism to gather industry experts that express a desire to contribute to the work of a standards development committee, ASME has found an increasing amount of interest in its IWG engagement platform. This meeting follows an October 29th meeting with industry stakeholders from Mexico. In addition to serving the nuclear industry, ASME has received interest in the formation of IWGs for its standards supporting the oil and gas, materials, inspection, vertical transportation, and material handling industries.

For more information on ASME Standards & Certification’s activities in Latin America or the Caribbean, contact James Ramirez (+1.212.591.8033).
