Special Journal Issue to Highlight Risk Analysis and Management of Complex Systems

Manuscripts are now being accepted for a special issue of the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part B: Mechanical Engineering that will feature papers addressing the subject of risk analysis and management of complex systems. The deadline for authors to submit a paper for the special issue, which is scheduled to be published in the summer of 2019, is Oct. 31, 2018.

The complexity of engineering systems increases significantly once primary subsystems including equipment, controls, communications and infrastructure are integrated as a whole — encompassing not only mechanical and electrical components, but also software, control modules and human–machine interfaces. During the design process, many assumptions are made that could affect risk profiles associated with the operational life of equipment and systems. Interest in analyzing and modeling the risk associated with complex engineering systems within industry and academia has intensified in recent years, and it has become evident that innovative theories, methodologies and technologies are needed to ensure safe design and risk reduction for complex systems and networks at systems scale.

The editors of the special issue of the Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part B are seeking contributions from both academia and industry on recent advances in applicable theory and concepts for risk analysis, quantification and management, and uncertainty modeling related to the design, construction and operation of complex systems.

The special issue will cover a range of topics including complex systems robustness and resilience; complex systems construction risk modeling and analysis; industrial application of uncertainty quantification; risk analysis and risk management, including hazards identification, failure scenario development and consequences evaluation; structural reliability and reliability-based structural optimization; uncertainty identification, quantification, propagation and reduction; and risk-informed decision-making.

The editors of the special issue are Gilberto F. M. de Souza, professor, University of São Paulo, Brazil, gfmsouza@usp.br; and Marcelo A. Trindade, professor, University of São Paulo, Brazil, trindade@sc.usp.br.

Manuscripts should be submitted to the editors by Oct. 31, 2018, through the ASME Journals Digital Submission Site. When submitting their papers, authors should select “Special Issue: SIO28B,” and then assign the paper type as “Research Paper.” Authors should alert the special issue editors by e-mail prior to their submissions. Early submission is strongly encouraged to facilitate early review and publication of the special issue.
