Journal of Applied Mechanics Award-Winning Paper Selected and Published Online

The Applied Mechanics Division recently selected Ahmed Elbanna, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as the winner of the division’s Journal of Applied Mechanics Award for 2019. Dr. Elbanna’s paper, “On the Role of the Plaque Porous Structure in Mussel Adhesion: Implications for Adhesion Control Using Bulk Patterning,” is now available online on ASME.org.

The Journal of Applied Mechanics Award recognizes the best paper published in the journal during the two calendar years immediately preceding the year of the award. The honor, which will be presented to Elbanna at the Applied Mechanics Division Banquet at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Salt Lake City this November, is presented to the corresponding author of the paper who received his or her Ph.D. no more than 10 years prior to July 1 of the award year. Corresponding authors who have yet to receive a Ph.D. may also be considered for the award.

Elbanna, who joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign faculty in 2013, earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a master’s degree in applied mechanics from the California Institute of Technology as well as a master’s degree in structural engineering and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cairo University in Egypt. In addition to the Journal of Applied Mechanics Award, he also received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award in 2018 and a Fellowship of the National Center of Supercomputing Applications in 2015.

“On the Role of the Plaque Porous Structure in Mussel Adhesion: Implications for Adhesion Control Using Bulk Patterning,” which was co-authored by Ahmed Ghareeb of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been posted on the Journal of Applied Mechanics Award page on ASME.org, along with the previous seven award-winning papers.
