E-Fest West to Feature Special Disney DCPI Panel Session

Feb. 23, 2018

ASME’s E-Fest West, to be held March 23-25 at the Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., will include a special panel luncheon and keynote presentation highlighting the innovative work being done at Disney’s Consumer Products and Interactive Media (DCPI), which develops and markets a range of entertaining physical and digital products, including smart toys, virtual and augmented reality experiences, and state-of-the-art games and apps. The session, “Bringing Disney Magic to Families and Fans through Technology,” will take place on Saturday, March 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

ASME Engineering Festivals (E-Fests) are global events that offer engineering students the chance to experience the fun and excitement of engineering through informative sessions and workshops, challenging student competitions, and lively social activities. E-Fest West is one of three E-Fests ASME is holding this spring, along with E-Fest Asia Pacific from March 16-18 in Delhi, India, and E-Fest East from April 13-15 in State College, Pa.

During the luncheon and keynote presentation at E-Fest West, three representatives from DCPI — Nikki Katz, Kathy de Paolo and Mike Goslin — will discuss their career paths, offer some insight into several interesting projects at DCPI, and explore the role technology plays in bringing Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars products to market. Katz, the vice president of technology at DCPI, manages organizational responsibilities that span the design, development, e-commerce, and technology platforms that drive Disney’s games and websites. De Paolo, the vice president of engineering, supervises DCPI’s machine learning and artificial intelligence endeavors to ensure the best experiences for end users. Goslin, the vice president of advanced development, works on innovative projects related to augmented reality, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence.

In addition to the keynote presentation, E-Fest West will include several other interesting sessions on March 24, including “FutureME Mini-Talks: Making a Successful Transition from College to Career,” with Jordan Duhe of Noble Plastics, Ritesh Lakhkar of Fitbit Inc., and Paige Balcom of the University of California, Berkeley; a career development interviewing skills workshop with Tom Munerlyn from Cal Poly Pomona’s Career Center; and a 3D workshop led by Simon Pun of Divergent 3D.

Students can register for E-Fest West — and save $25 off the on-site registration price — if they sign up by March 22. Visit https://efestwest.asme.org/page/1322197/registration to begin the registration process.
