Braden Hancock – The Recipient of the ASME Kenneth Andrew Roe Scholarship

NEW YORK, Aug. 15, 2012 – Braden Hancock is a model of ambition and hard work, a rising star in the engineering profession. Later this month, the mechanical engineering student at Brigham Young University will complete his second stint at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base – and then he’s off on a study abroad program with 15 companies in seven countries in Europe.

There, Hancock will become involved in a research program focused on global engineering, analyzing the challenges and opportunities associated with globally-based product development. When he returns from Europe, Hancock will commence his senior year at BYU in pursuit of a teaching career, with the support of a $12,500 scholarship from the ASME Foundation.

ASME Foundation gave the 2012 Kenneth Andrew Roe Scholarship to Hancock based on his scholastic abilities, personal character, and potential contribution to the mechanical engineering profession. He has spent the last 16 months as a research assistant at Wright-Patterson, where he was involved on the redesign of a turbine engine component to achieve reductions in shock-wave interactions.

Hancock also worked at Wright-Patterson from 2007 to 2009. As an engineering aide, Hancock assisted in the development of system to analyze supersonic turbulent flow characteristics in jet engines. In addition, he created technical drawing standards for turbine research.

At BYU, Hancock was part of the Design Exploration Research Laboratory, one of only three undergraduate students in the lab. He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

The Kenneth Andrew Roe Scholarship, named for the former president of ASME, is awarded to one student per year.
