Applications Now Being Accepted for Two ASME Congressional Fellowships

ASME Government Relations is now accepting applications for two 2018-2019 ASME Congressional Fellowship opportunities that are available to ASME members through the ASME Federal Government Fellowship Program. Online applications for the Fellowships will be accepted through January 31, 2018.

Since 1973, ASME has sponsored 119 Federal Government Fellows, providing them with an opportunity to serve a one-year term in the Administration or U.S. Congress. Fellows serve as independent, non-biased advisors in engineering, science and technology, bringing a nonpartisan, pragmatic approach to analysis and input which has a profound impact on the decision-making process. The result is effective and technologically appropriate public policy based on sound engineering principles.

Applicants for the 2018-2019 Congressional Fellowships must have a strong background in the areas of energy and bioengineering. ASME has long supported a balanced portfolio of energy supplies to meet the nation's energy needs, including advanced clean coal, petroleum, nuclear, natural gas, waste-to-energy, biomass, solar, wind and hydroelectric power. This year, ASME is also offering a new Fellowship in bioengineering. Bioengineers employ mechanical engineering principles in the development of many life-saving and life-improving technologies, such as the artificial heart, prosthetic joints, diagnostics, as well as emerging areas such as nanotechnology and biomanufacturing.

As reported last month in ASME News, ASME Government Relations will host a webinar, titled “Technology Intersection Policy and Politics,” that will give participants a look at what it is like to be an ASME Congressional Fellow. The webinar, which will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, Oct. 27, will feature two current ASME Fellows — one in the U. S. Senate and another in the U.S. House of Representatives — who will provide personal insight on their experiences working on Capitol Hill. Additional information about the 2018-2019 ASME Congressional Fellowships in energy and bioengineering will also be provided during the webinar.

Guest speakers will include ASME President-Nominee Said Jahanmir, Ph.D., who is currently serving as a 2015-2017 ASME Congressional Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives for the Honorable Tim Ryan (D-OH), co-chair of the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus, and Michael Martin, Ph.D., who served as a 2016-2017 ASME Congressional Fellow in the U.S. Senate for the Honorable Jack Reed (D-RI). The moderator of the webinar will be Lester Su, Ph.D., a lecturer in mechanical engineering at Stanford University and the chair of the ASME Committee on Government Relations.
