Manufacturing is entering a new age, fueled by advances in artificial intelligence, automation, and investment that are accelerating innovation. At the same time, supply chain disruption, economic uncertainty, and workforce challenges are testing the resilience of the sector that produces products and systems that underpin modern society. Through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and advocacy, ASME helps create the conditions necessary for engineers to developmore efficient manufacturing solutions with confidence.
 

Engineering Confidence in Manufacturing 

Manufacturing is where engineering becomes reality – and mechanical engineers are at the center of it. Their ability to combine technical expertise, systems thinking, problem-solving, and practical implementation allows new ideas to move from concept to production and ultimately into products that improve lives. 
 
As manufacturing systems become increasingly digital, automated, and interconnected, innovation alone is not enough. Advanced technologies must also be trusted, validated, and scalable. Standards provide the common foundation that allows organizations to adopt new approaches with confidence while maintaining  reliability and quality: 
 
  • ASME's Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standard provides common messaging, establishing the symbols, rules, definitions, and practices that communicate design intent clearly and consistently across the manufacturing ecosystem. The result is a universal engineering language that enables reliable and repeatable outcomes.
  • As manufacturers invest in new technologies and increasingly complex production systems, the Plant Systems Design (PSD-1) standard provides a structured framework for designing facilities that balance  reliability, performance, and cost. Application of PSD-1 helps organizations confidently move innovative ideas from concept to operation. 
  • The Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ) standards portfolio ensures that computational models and simulations used to design, test, and optimize products are credible, reliable, and fit for decision-making. Its deployment enables faster innovation, reduced risk, and greater confidence in advanced manufacturing technologies. 
While standards and certifications provide the basis for quality and consistency, continued advancement depends on the exchange of knowledge and ideas. As manufacturing becomes increasingly complex, innovation requires collaboration among engineers, researchers, educators, industry leaders, policymakers, workforce organizations, and professional societies. 
 

Advancing Manufacturing Through Collaboration 

Technical challenges are rarely solved in isolation. Creating connections becomes increasingly important as manufacturers navigate workforce shortages, digital transformation, supply chain resilience, and evolving global competition. 
 
ASME's annual Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC), co-located with Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ (SME) North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) and hosted this year by Penn State University, brings together experts from industry and academia to explore topics including advanced manufacturing and digital transformation, additive manufacturing and advanced materials, workforce development, and the future of manufacturing. This year's event drew nearly 1,000 participants, making it one of the largest manufacturing research gatherings in North America. 
 
ASME also advances manufacturing by engaging with the broader network of organizations, experts, and stakeholders shaping the industry's future. ASME will attend the Manufacturing Momentum Summit Workshop in Washington, DC this August. Hosted by the American Manufacturing Communities CollaborativeASME's presence reflects an ongoing commitment to advancing the broader manufacturing ecosystem through workforce development, innovation, policy engagement, and cross-sector collaboration.
 

Developing Future Manufacturing Talent 

Workforce development remains one of manufacturing's most pressing strategic priorities. As experienced workers retire and technology continues to evolve, manufacturers need talent equipped with the technical expertise, adaptability, and global awareness required to compete in an increasingly interconnected economy. 
 
Public policy can play an important role in addressing this challenge. Initiatives such as HR 9097 have emerged as a tool to strengthen the American manufacturing workforce. If passed, the bill would establish an exchange program that enables U.S. manufacturing professionals to gain hands-on training and certifications abroad, returning with skills that strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.  
 
The bipartisan policy initiative underscores the importance of workforce development and recruiting next-generation talent while leveraging opportunities to learn from international experts in the field.

The next era of manufacturing will be shaped not only by technology, but by the standards, collaboration, and talent that allow innovation to succeed at scale. Engineers have a critical role to play in that future. By empowering engineers, advancing technical excellence, and fostering collaboration, ASME helps ensure manufacturing continues to improve lives around the world.
