Mechanical Engineering® Magazine Announces Winners of 2019 Emerging Technology Awards

NEW YORK (December 2, 2019) – For the third consecutive year, ASME’s Mechanical Engineering® magazine considered dozens of recent innovations in each of five strategic engineering fields – advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, clean energy, pressure technology, and robotics – then selected five ascending technologies that have left the research and development phase and appear poised to transform their fields. The magazine celebrates those technologies and the innovators behind them with its Emerging Technology Awards.

The 2019 winners are:

  • Shark Robotics’ Colossus, the firefighting robot that helped preserve Notre Dame; The device carries up to one ton of equipment and withstands temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit using a lithium-ion battery, making it useful for entering situations too dangerous for humans.
  • Lattice Technology’s shape-shifting pressure vessels; Their internal lattice structure allows the vessels to be constructed to any size or shape, which may ease and increase shipment or storage of pressurized gasses in any type of ship or containment.
  • Momentum Dynamics’ inductive charging system that allows electric buses and cars to recharge just by parking in the right spot;
  • MBFZ toolcraft’s 3D-printed conformal injection mold; By combining topology optimization and 3D printing, the engineers halved the mold’s mass and slashed heating-cooling cycle times by 30 percent for the same cost as the original mold.
  • 3D Systems’ (NYSE: DDD) on-demand anatomical modeling service; A clinician provides medical scans and images to 3D Systems, which 3D prints and ships patient-specific anatomical models back to enable presurgical planning, better communication with the patient, reduced operating room times and improved patient outcomes.

“The five technologies honored this year with Emerging Technology Awards are not plans or proposals—they are in the marketplace today,” says ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile. “While none of them are household names, they all seem poised for something big. These scrappy startups looked at longstanding problems and found solutions that eluded the multinationals.”
