This official ASME learning path consists of two courses:
 
Course 1:  Communicating and Problem Solving for Today’s Engineers

Bridge the communications gap and navigate all business situations more effectively. ASME’s Communicating and Problem Solving for Today’s Engineers course will provide engineers and technical professionals with the soft and interpersonal skills needed to be successful in their career. 

  • Schedule: This course commences at 9:30 AM and ends at 6 PM with breaks scheduled throughout.

Course 2:  Managing Others in Times of Change 

Reduce the impact of accelerated change on agile engineering teams with ASME’s Managing Others in Times of Change Professional Development course.  This course helps engineers and technical managers excel by supporting them with skills to influence and inspire others and address the common leadership challenges of today’s workplace. 

  • Schedule: This course commences at 9:30 AM and ends at 6 PM with breaks scheduled throughout.

Course 1: Communicating and Problem Solving for Today’s Engineers

Day One: Mastering Communication and Managing Conflict as an Engineer

  • Understand your natural communication styles by using the DiSC profile
  • Learn and practice how to adjust your communication to meet the needs of stakeholders
  • Communicate to build partnerships with your colleagues, clients, and teammates
  • Adopt a communicator’s mindset
  • Using effective communication to avoid or deal with conflict
  • Understand what conflict is telling you and how to handle it properly
  • Practice and follow a simple conflict resolution model. 

 
Day Two: Succeeding in Times of Change and Disruption

  • Know what happens to your brain during change 
  • Get specific actions to take to move yourself successfully through the stages of the Change Cycle 
  • Build a plan with action steps to help team members, clients, and coworkers through each stage of a change 
  • Apply problem solving methodologies to gather data to determine the actual problem 
  • Practice using tools to get to a root cause in order to generate solutions that last 
  • Explore ways to prevent and overcome obstacles to completing a project plan 
  • Embrace that fact that change and disruption can actually give you a competitive advantage 

Course Two: Managing Others in Times of Change

Day One: Coaching and Leading Rising Engineering Professionals 

  • Assess skill levels and gaps and create a plan so rising engineering professionals can start producing quickly 
  • Recruit, nurture, train, and equip them with the skills they need to become high performing engineers  
  • Create an successful onboarding program to help new employees hit the ground running 
  • Build a strong culture that makes engineering talent want to stay 
  • Tap into an engineer’s motivation to increase engagement and productivity 

Day Two: Managing Others During Changing Times 

  • Strategies for individuals and leaders to use to ensure success for remote workers 
  • Best practices for communicating technical information even if you can’t touch the product, the equipment, or be near the people
  • Reveal ideas to best coach, support, and lead remote and hybrid teams
  • Apply the understanding of the Change Cycle to help manage others in a changing workplace 
  • Discover what team members need from their manager when they are experiencing change 
  • Build a plan with action steps to help team members, clients, and other stakeholders successfully navigate each stage of a change to speed up acceptance and adoption

Jackie Martin is a professional trainer, speaker, and business coach with a passion for equipping individuals, teams, and business leaders with the communication, leadership, and change resiliency skills needed in the workplace today. 
 
As a 25-year veteran educator with Training Systems, Inc., Jackie has been sharing engineering management and leadership skills with ASME engineers from all over the world.   Her goal is to equip, encourage, and connect engineers to their purpose and passion, so they can fall in love with what they do all over again.  Jackie knows that when engineers love what they do, they are more productive, creative, safe, loyal, energized and ultimately more satisfied in just about everything they do.    
 
Jackie considers herself a leadership junkie, a serial entrepreneur, and a life-long learner.  She’s also a John Maxwell Founding Leadership trainer, a certified Change Cycle expert, and an NLP Practitioner.  Recently Jackie begun sharing her educational experience with high school and college students, by founding a non-profit called BMore Learning.  BMore provides life and workforce readiness education that prepare students for real life in and after school.
