National Science Foundation Awards Quantum Institute Planning Grants to Support Establishment of Institutes Dedicated to Quantum Science, Computing, Simulation, and Sensing

The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded up to $150,000 in “conceptualization grants” to more than a dozen different research groups. The grants are in support of a directive in the National Quantum Initiative Act that called for the establishment of NSF multidisciplinary centers for quantum research and education.

Under these grants, each group will receive up to $150,000 for one year to hone their ideas for specific institutes that focus on the advancement of quantum networking, computing, simulation, and sensing. Looking ahead, there will be additional proposal rounds, NSF expects to have additional challenge institutes, which are “large-scale interdisciplinary research projects that aim to advance the frontiers of quantum information science and engineering.” These institutes will be funded at levels of up to $5 million/year over the next five years.
