NIH Seeks Input on Framework for Strategic Plan for FY 2021-2025

The National Institute of Health (NIH) is seeking input on its next agency-wide Strategic Plan, which will span from FY 2021-2025. Congress requires that the agency update its Strategic Plan every five years to comply with the 21st Century Cures Act, which was signed into law by President Obama on December 13, 2016. In planning this next Strategic Plan, NIH has highlighted “Training the Biomedical Research Workforce” and “Leveraging Partnerships” as priorities. These pillars are intended to advance NIH’s overall mission of supporting research in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems, and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.

The Strategic Plan will prioritize on three main objectives:

1. Advancing Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences
2. Developing, Maintaining, and Renewing Scientific Research Capacity       
3. Exemplifying and Promoting the Highest Level of Scientific Integrity, Public Accountability, and Social Responsibility in the Conduct of Science

Specifically, NIH seeks comments on any or all of, but not limited to, the following topics:

• Cross-Cutting Themes articulated in the framework, and/or additional cross-cutting themes that may be considered
• NIH’s priorities across the three key areas (Objectives) articulated in the framework, including potential benefits, drawbacks or challenges, and other priority areas for consideration
• Future opportunities or emerging trans-NIH needs

The Request for Information (RFI) invites comments and suggestions to be submitted electronically by March 25, 2020. The agency plans to release the plan in December 2020.
