LAST CHANCE! Apply for a 2021–2022 ASME Congressional Fellowship

Did you know that only 17 out of the 535 Members of the new 117th Congress are engineers, and comparatively few Congressional staff possess real-world technical training and knowledge? Yet they are called upon every day to make policy and funding decisions on complex science, engineering, and technology issues, issues that can have a wide-ranging effect on the American economy and national security. In 1973, ASME became the first professional engineering and scientific society to have the vision to place a Congressional Fellow in the U.S. Congress, and now is your chance to contribute your technical expertise to the lawmaking process by applying for one of these competitive positions.

ASME Congressional Fellows will relocate to Washington, DC and receive a stipend of $80K to serve for one year in the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate to provide unbiased engineering, technical, and scientific advice to policymakers. Why Apply?

Policymakers are addressing major legislative and policy issues that are facing our nation, and as federal legislation becomes increasingly technical, the need for engineering expertise is essential. For the past 47 years, ASME Federal Government Fellows have served in the Executive and Legislative Branches of Government providing a valuable public service to the nation while at the same time providing engineers with a unique opportunity to participate directly in the policymaking process. The result is effective and technologically appropriate public policy based on sound engineering principles.

One of the most important underpinnings of ASME is a realization that through our 100,000+ members, we offer a treasure trove of technical knowledge, experience, and expertise. By taking a leadership role and sharing our technical expertise and professional judgment with decision makers, ASME is not only able to contribute to the development of rational policies, but also to increase public understanding, as well as strengthen support for the engineering, science and technology enterprise.

Engineers have a responsibility to become more effective citizens by becoming involved with the political process and the needs of the broader society. The ASME Federal Government Fellowship Program is an important resource in this effort. With generous support from the ASME Foundation, the ASME Federal Fellows program has successfully placed knowledgeable individuals in key positions in multiple Administrations and the U.S. Congress.

How to Apply:

ASME is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates with expertise in energy, bioengineering, and manufacturing for our 2021-2022 ASME Congressional Fellowships. The deadline to apply for these competitive opportunities is January 31, 2021. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and ASME Members at the time of application.
