DOE's Advanced Manufacturing Office Seeks Launches Federal Consortium for Advanced Batteries

The Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Manufacturing Office, in partnership with the Department of Commerce (DOC), Department of Defense (DoD), and Department of State, has launched a Federal Consortium for Advanced Batteries (FCAB) to accelerate the development of a robust, secure, domestic industrial base for advanced batteries. The FCAB will provide federal agencies a platform for cooperation and coordination when working to develop domestic advanced battery technology. The coordinated effort will help to streamline the work being done to ensure all related projects across the federal government are aligned, which will ensure better, faster results and mitigate duplicative efforts.

In announcing the launch of the FCAB, Daniel Simmons, Assistant Secretary of DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy stated that, "Batteries power our daily lives, from consumer electronics to national defense. Improving battery technology is key to increased electric vehicle acceptance and creating the grid of the future with integrated resiliency and flexibility.”

The FCAB came about after being conceptualized in DOE’s Energy Storage Grand Challenge (ESGC) Draft Roadmap. First listed under the “Manufacturing and Supply Chain” section, the roadmap outlined the FCAB as one of its five major goals for addressing manufacturing and supply chain challenges. Establishing a domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem will support key U.S. Government policy initiatives and the missions of each of the agencies taken part in the consortium.
