Ivan Owen is a self-taught mechanical designer who collaborated with Richard Van As, a South African carpenter, to produce RoboHand, a low-cost artificial mechanical hand, using a 3-D printer. The Robohand provides working fingers for those with a partial hand, and designs can be downloaded for free and the device built at home. For families of children, this is especially important because many prosthetics are prohibitively expensive to replace as children grow. The design and fit of a RoboHand is easily rescaled through the 3-D printer.
