Alaeden Jlelaty is project manager for construction of the first phase of New York City's Second Avenue Subway project, a project first proposed in 1929. A veteran of large infrastructure construction, Jlelaty describes the twin tunnels mined from beneath the streets of one of the world's most densely populated cities. The project, which also includes three new subway stations, depended on a gigantic tunnel-boring machine to work through the hard rock of Manhattan. The first phase is nearing completion: the tunnels have been bored and lined and work on the stations is now proceeding. If the schedule holds, the first phase of the new Second Avenue Subway will open in 2014.
