Mechanisms, systems & devices

Mechanisms, systems & devices

are so fundamental to mechanical engineering that the terms are often used interchangeably. They are the means by which humans (and some animals) impose their wants and needs on the physical world. Mechanisms, systems and devices range from waterwheels to robots and aircraft, from heart pumps to satellites to weapons to nanoscale machines. Since the advent of steam power, designing, building and testing has employed the majority of engineers and tinkerers.
