Melvin R. Green Medal recipient James W. Coaker (r.) poses with ASME President J. Robert Sims

James W. Coaker, of Fairfax Station, VA, was presented with ASME's Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal at the 2014 Honors Assembly held during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition on November 17, 2014. He was recognized for outstanding contributions in promoting the acceptance of ASME standards worldwide through personal engagement with key stakeholders, publications in industry journals, and professional development programs; and for leadership in the development of performance standards that facilitate the incorporation of new technology and encourage innovative engineering solutions. Mr. Coaker serves on the Board on Safety Codes and Standards and has been a member of the A17.1 Standards Committee for Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators since 1991. In addition he has served on the Council of Codes and Standards, the Board of Governors, the board of directors of ASME Foundation and as chair of the Events Committee.

Shabbir M. Rawalpindiwala (pictured, right), manager of codes and standards for the Kohler Company, in Kohler, Wisconson was awarded the Patrick Higgins Medal during the ASME/CSA A112 Plumbing Materials and Equipment Standards Committee meeting of January 26-29, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas. He was recognized for contributions on numerous technical specifications for plumbing products including authoring more than 100 proposals; and for leadership on the ASME A112 Committee, and extraordinary commitment to the harmonization process between the U.S. and Canada.

ASME to Host Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) and Quality Control (QC) Personnel Qualification and Certification Workshop

On April 28, 2015, ASME will carry out a workshop on the ASME NDE (ANDE) Personnel Certification Program during the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Week in Colorado Springs, CO. This will be the first in a series of workshops with the purpose of providing information on the roll-out of the new Personnel Certification Program in accordance with the ASME ANDE-1 Standard.

Some of the topics covered in the workshop include:

  • An overview of the Program and Certification process
  • Purpose of the ANDE-1 Standard
  • How ANDE differs from existing Personnel Qualification and Certification processes
  • Regulator perspective

For more information on the workshop, visit the ANDE program website or contact ande@asme.org.

2015 ASME Verification and Validation Symposium to Highlight Journal of Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification

On May 13-15, 2015, ASME will carry out the Verification and Validation Symposium in Las Vergas, NV. 2015 marks the fourth anniversary of ASME's annual symposium dedicated entirely to the emerging field of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification of computer simulations. This event provides a unique opportunity for engineers and scientists from all disciplines that use computational modeling and simulation to discuss and exchange ideas and methods for verification of codes and solutions. Highlighted in this year's symposium will be the Journal of Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification (JVVUQ), which disseminates original and applied research, illustrative examples, and high quality validation experiments & data from leaders in the field of VVUQ of Computation Models.

The ASME V&V Standards Committee and V&V Subcommittees will also hold their meetings in the days prior to the Symposium in an effort to solicit participation and discuss additional topics for standards development with a broader community.

For more information, visit the symposium website or contact Ryan Crane (+1.212.591.7004).

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Elevator "MasterClasses" Planned

On May 27, 2015, ASME will host the first of two master classes, Application of the A17.6 Standard for Elevator Suspension, Compensation and Governor Systems. The class aims to provide attendees with a detailed understanding of code requirements for Carbon Steel Wire Ropes, Aramid Fiber Ropes and Elastomeric Coated Steel Belts for elevator suspension and compensation purposes, as well as ropes used for elevator speed governor systems.

The second master class, Application of the A17.7 / B44.7 Performance Based Code for Elevators and Escalators, will take place on May 28, 2015. The class aims to provide attendees with a broad understanding of the application of the A17.7/B44.7 Performance Based Code. Both classes will take place in New York City at ASME's headquarters.

For more information, visit the MasterClass website or contact Jennifer Delda (+1.212.591.7108).

SPOTLIGHT ON – STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT INTERNATIONAL WORKING GROUPS

In December 2014, ASME launched two new Standards & Certification (S&C) International Working Group (IWG) activities: a Power Boilers (Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I) IWG in India and a Pressure Vessels (Section VIII) IWG in Italy. These groups join the growing list of ASME's International Working Groups, which span numerous standards activities in countries and regions around the world.

Providing mechanisms that facilitate participation of stakeholders regardless of their geographic location has been a key focus of S&C; coupled with ASME's CS Connect online standards development tools, IWGs have been a popular and effective means of engagement.
