Nomination Deadlines Near for 11 Prominent Society Awards

The ASME Honors and Awards department is currently accepting nominations for 11 Society awards. The application deadlines for these honors ― including the Henry R. Worthington Medal, the Fluids Engineering Award, the R. Tom Sawyer Award and the Ralph Coats Roe Medal ― will fall between Aug. 30 and Sept. 30.

Two of these awards, the Henry R. Worthington Medal and the Fluids Engineering Award, have new nomination deadlines this year.

Nominations for the Henry R. Worthington Medal — recognizing eminent achievement in the field of pumping machinery, systems and concepts, in areas including research, development, design, innovation, management, education or literature — are now due Sept. 30. The winner will receive $5,000, a bronze medal and a certificate. Nominations should be emailed to J.A. Bamberger at bambergerj@asme.org.

The deadline to submit nominations for the Fluids Engineering Award, which had previously been due Nov. 30, has also been moved to Sept. 30. The recipient of the award, which is presented for outstanding contributions to the field of fluids engineering, will receive $1,000, a bronze medal and a certificate. Nominations should be emailed to Ning Zhang, award chair, at nzhang@mcneese.edu.

Nominations for the R. Tom Sawyer Award, which recognizes important contributions to advance the purpose of the Gas Turbine Industry and to the International Gas Turbine Institute over a substantial period of time, are due Aug. 30. The winner will receive $1000, a plaque and a certificate. Nominations should be emailed to Richard Dennis, award chair, at richard.dennis@netl.doe.gov.

The deadline to submit nominations for the Freeman Scholar Award, which honors extensive experience in fluids engineering, is Sept. 1. The candidate chosen as the Freeman Scholar will receive $10,000 and a certificate. Nominations should be e-mailed to Fran McKivor, ASME Honors and Awards, at mckivor@asme.org.

Nominations for the Y.C. Fung Early Career Award, which recognizes young investigators who are committed to pursuing research in the field of bioengineering and have demonstrated significant potential to make substantial contributions to the field, are also due Sept. 1. Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in any field of engineering, physics, medicine or life sciences. Candidates must have received their terminal degree less than 10 years prior to June 1 of the year the award is conferred. The award consists of $1,000, a bronze medal and a certificate. Nominations should be emailed to Naomi Chesler, award chair, at chesler@engr.wisc.edu.  

Five other ASME awards also have a nomination deadline of Sept. 1:

- The Patrick J. Higgins Award, in recognition of an individual who has contributed to the enhancement of standardization; $1,000, a bronze medal and a certificate; email nominations to Howard Harary, award chair, at Howard.harary@nist.gov.

- The H.R. Lissner Medal, for active members of the Bioengineering Division who have made a pioneering contribution in biomechanical research; $1,000, a bronze medal and a certificate; email nominations to Michele Grimm, award chair, at mgrimm@wayne.edu.

- The Van C. Mow Medal, for candidates with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree who have made meritorious contributions to the field of bioengineering; $1,000, a bronze medal and a certificate; email nominations to Dawn Elliott, award chair, at delliott@udel.edu.

- The Yeram Touloukian Award, for outstanding technical contributions to the field of thermophysical properties by an individual who is internationally recognized for major contributions in the thermophysical field; a bronze medal and a certificate; email nominations to Daniel Friend, award chair, at daniel.friend@nist.gov.

- The Savio L-Y. Woo Medal, for active members of the Bioengineering Division who have translated meritorious bioengineering science to clinical practice through research, education, professional development, and with service to the bioengineering community; $1,000, a bronze medal and a certificate; email nominations to B. Barry Lieber, award chair, at baruch.lieber@stonybrook.edu.

The deadline to submit nominations for the prestigious Ralph Coats Roe Medal is Sept. 15. The award, which recognizes an outstanding contribution toward a better public understanding and appreciation of the engineer’s worth to society, consists of a $12,000 honorarium, a gold medal and a certificate. Nominations should be submitted by email to Betty Bowersox, award chair, at bowersoxb@gmail.com.
