ASME TEC TALK – Introduction to ASME Codes and Standards for H2 Service and Relevant Challenges in Industry

Kang Xu
This TEC Talk features Kang Xu, pressure vessel consultant for Linde and an ASME Fellow, who will discuss ASME Codes and Standards for Hydrogen Service, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII-3 KD-10, and ASME B31.12. It will be held Thursday, September 23, at 12 pm EDT.

KD-10 is a part of high-pressure vessel code and provides fracture mechanics-based rules for designing pressure vessels intended for hydrogen service up to 15000 psi. B31.12, the only standalone design and construction standard dedicated to piping and pipelines in H2 service, was developed 15 years ago with the anticipated H2 economy and infrastructure to transport H2 at pressures up to 3000 psi.
The presentation reviews some basic mechanical properties of carbon and alloy steels in high-pressure hydrogen.  These properties provided the basis of the code and standard development. The discussion includes technical considerations in materials, design, fabrication, and inspections in H2 service.  Recent developments in KD-10 and B31.12 will be also covered. The last part of the presentation addresses some industry standards, particularly in the industrial gas industry, and some industry experience in areas of hydrogen production, transportation, and storage.

Challenges relevant to design and materials in hydrogen that industries are currently facing are discussed.
