ASME Convenes Public Policy Discussions at IMECE 2020
In conjunction with the 2020 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE), ASME convened engaging discussions focused on public policy priorities for the engineering community.
The ASME Public Affairs and Outreach Council hosted two CEOs in the Manufacturing USA Institute network, a national public-private partnership ecosystem of academia, manufacturers, and federal government partners (under the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Energy). Both CEOs, John Dyck of CESMII—the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute—and Chandra Brown of MxD—Manufacturing X Digital—presented on the importance of digital transformation and the future of U.S. manufacturing and the global supply chain.
CESMII, “The Smart Manufacturing Institute,” and MxD, “The Digital Manufacturing Institute,” are two of 14 institutes nationwide designed to accelerate U.S. manufacturing and competitiveness.
ASME’s Committee on Government Relations also met virtually, discussing a range of ASME public positions and the organization’s premier Federal Government Fellowship program. Recent former and currently serving Federal Fellows, hailing from varied congressional and federal agency offices, presented on their issue areas and on the importance of technical expertise within the U.S. policymaking process. The 2020-2021 class consists of three ASME Congressional Fellows serving in the offices of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), and the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. Applications for the 2021-2022 Congressional Fellowships with opportunities in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, and energy are now open until January 31, 2021.
Continuing the theme of the ASME Federal Fellows’ impact, ASME’s Manufacturing Public Policy Task Force supported a virtual panel of former Fellows to highlight the organization’s engagement in the federal government. Former Fellows presented on their experiences in the U.S. House of Representatives, Senate, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)’s Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office (AMNPO), and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).
