Zachary Pritchard Named 2020-2021 ASME Congressional Fellow

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 26, 2020) – The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has named Zachary Pritchard, Ph.D., as a 2020-2021 ASME Congressional Fellow – Manufacturing. He officially began his fellowship on Sept. 1, serving in the office of the Honorable Cathy Castor (D-FL) and the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis in the U.S. House of Representatives. Pritchard previously worked as a policy analyst at the Center for Local, State and Urban Policy (CLoSUP) where he focused on community acceptance of renewable energy.

“ASME is pleased to welcome Zach Pritchard to the distinguished roster of engineers who have provided valuable service to our nation through the Federal Government Fellowship Program,” says ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile. “Through these prestigious year-long engagements, our fellows have a unique opportunity to participate directly in the policy-making process and gain an insider’s perspective on government decision-making – and, in turn, they can apply that learning to their professional roles and better contribute to the mission and vision of their own organizations.”

Pritchard recently completed his doctorate in chemical engineering at the University of Michigan, where his research used theoretical and computational modeling to study continuous vat photopolymerization methods in additive manufacturing. His work has focused on improving part fidelity and increasing production rates by accounting for effects in light propagation, resin flow dynamics, and reaction kinetics. He has studied the impact of wind infrastructure property taxes in Michigan communities and analyzed state-level ballot initiatives to mandate renewable energy.

“I am honored to have been selected as an ASME Congressional Fellow,” says Pritchard. “The fellowship is an incredible opportunity for engineers to learn about the policymaking process and to contribute their expertise. Within just the first few weeks, I have already developed a much deeper understanding of how Congress operates and have found areas where I can contribute. The Select Committee's holistic approach to addressing climate change includes traditional climate policies as well as manufacturing, transportation, public health, and environmental justice, giving me a chance to learn about and contribute to a wide range of policy areas.”

In addition to his Ph.D., Pritchard holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. He is an alumnus of the University of Michigan’s Science, Technology, and Public Policy program.
