ASME Engineering Festivals™ Announces Program for E-Fest South America in Lima, Peru

Three-Day Event Features a Keynote from AGP Glass, Multiple Competitions
and Networking Opportunities for Engineering Students

NEW YORK, August 1, 2019 – Engineering students at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) are collaborating with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to host an action-packed multi-day event, Aug. 8-10, 2019, at PUCP in Lima, Peru.

ASME Engineering Festivals™ (E-Fests) presents E-Fest South America, where students will showcase their technical skills and creativity and connect with thought leaders and practicing engineers for career advice. Online registration is now open. About 500 participants are expected at the event, including engineering students who have already registered from PUCP and multiple universities across Latin America.

The three-day E-Fest experience includes four competitions that give students a chance to apply their engineering education:

  • Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) – Now filled with 18 teams from 13 colleges and universities, students will design and build sustainable and practical transportation alternatives for everyday use – from commuting to work, to carrying goods to market.
  • Student Design Competition – Student teams will design prototypes, typically involving robotics, and engage them in battle.
  • Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D (IAM3D) Challenge – The 2019 ASME IAM3D Hovercraft Competition tasks students to create an unmanned emergency resupply vehicle that can traverse many mediums to deliver lifesaving aid to those in need.
  • Old Guard Oral Presentation and Technical Poster Competition – This competition is designed to emphasize the value of delivering clear, concise and effective oral presentations, particularly pertaining to some sphere in which an engineer is or should be involved.

AGP Glass Senior Manager of Research and Development Andres Sarmiento will deliver a keynote address at the opening/welcome ceremony 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 8. His presentation will focus on “Development and Innovation in Automotive Glass with New Technologies. AGP - Success Story: Bringing Latin American Innovation to the World.”

The weekend program also includes a variety of interactive workshops and sessions, fun social events and entertainment. Some highlights include “Gaining A Competitive Advantage Through Simulation Driven Design and Optimization,” sponsored by Altair, “Digital Ecosystem – Industry 4.0, Large-Scale Water Systems” sponsored by Bechtel, plus networking opportunities, Futsal! and PUCP lab tours.

“The energy from the students at E-Fest is palpable and the competition is intense,” says ASME Executive/CEO Tom Costabile. “ASME is proud to play a leadership role in convening this forum where classroom concepts are put to the test and students showcase their creative thinking skills, while also learning from and networking with industry professionals. It’s a great opportunity for professional growth and leadership training for future engineers.”

For the second consecutive year, Siemens is a platinum sponsor of the ASME E-Fest event series.

“The E-Fest movement demonstrates the unique value that ASME delivers in bringing industry and academia together to prepare the next generation workforce, and to empower today’s engineering students with hands-on experience, networking and career preparation,” says John Miller, senior vice president of mainstream engineering at Siemens PLM Software.
