Students: March 7 is the Deadline to Apply for an ASME Scholarship

The deadline for students to apply for the approximately 80 scholarships being offered through the ASME Scholarship Program — including the new Standards & Certification Scholarship and the ASME INSPIRE Clarke Scholarship — has been extended to March 7. ASME will offer student members more than $300,000 in scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year through the program.

The ASME Scholarship Program seeks to ensure the future of the mechanical engineering profession while relieving some of the financial burden for ASME student members as they pursue their engineering degrees. ASME scholarships are made possible by the generous contributions of donors through the ASME Foundation and ASME Auxiliary.

ASME student members who are interested in applying only need to submit a single online application to be considered for all of the scholarships for which they qualify. Scholarships available to undergraduate students for the 2018-2019 school year include the $13,000 Kenneth Andrew Roe Scholarship, the $5,000 Nuclear Engineering Division Scholarship, the $5,000 Garland Duncan Scholarship, the $4,000 American Electric Power Scholarship, the $4,000 Melvin R. Green Scholarship, and the $3,000 William J. and Marijane E. Adams, Jr. Scholarship.

The new Standards & Certifications Scholarship is a five-year renewable scholarship of up to $10,000 per year. Preference will be given to students who have already declared a major in mechanical engineering and exhibit strong interest and some knowledge on the need, development and benefits of consensus industry standards and certification programs for mechanical engineering applications. Applicants must also show an interest in technology fields related to ASME Standards & Certification, such as clean energy, pressure technology, transportation, bioprocessing, medical devices, cranes and lifting devices, elevators and escalators, manufacturing, turbine generators, and risk analysis.

The second scholarship added this year, the ASME INSPIRE Clarke Scholarship, will be awarded to incoming freshmen for the 2018-2019 school year. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an ABET-accredited program no later than the fall of the academic year immediately following their graduation from high school. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need and strong STEM involvement. To be eligible, students must have graduated from the ASME INSPIRE program and completed all 16 of its modules.

Several ASME scholarships are also available to graduate and Ph.D. students, including the $4,500 Willis F. Thompson Memorial Scholarship (also open to undergraduate students), the $4,000 ASME/Virginia Tech Memorial Scholarship; the $3,000 Elisabeth M. and Winchell M. Parsons Scholarship, and the $3,000 Marjorie Roy Rothermel Scholarship.
