Hong Kong Section to Conduct Symposium and Workshop Event Focusing on Advanced Boiler Technology

May 12, 2017

The ASME Hong Kong Section will present the International Symposium on Advanced Boiler Technology and Workshop (ISABTW) from June 21-23 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong. The symposium and workshop, which will feature an impressive roster of international experts from the power plant and equipment inspection industries, is designed is to provide a venue where engineers and professionals from the boiler and energy fields can familiarize themselves with the latest developments in state-of-the-art advanced boiler technology as well as learn about best practices in asset management and plant operations.

Engineering group Doosan Babcock and Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) department are technical sponsors for the event, which will begin with a two-day Advanced Boiler Technology Workshop on June 21 and 22. Stuart Cameron, ASME Board of Governor-elect, will be a presenter at one of the workshop’s sessions, titled “Internationally Recognized Design Code Comparisons,” where he will offer an overview and comparison of the ASME and European boiler codes, as well as an outline of proposals for the incorporation of a new part of the ASME Code applying to ultra-supercritical boiler plants.

The workshop will also encompass sessions addressing the history of boiler development, current and future boiler designs, changes in the 2017 ASME Boiler Code, Design by Rule and Design by Analysis, and inspection and maintenance best practices. Presenters will include David Anderson, Simon Cadwallader and Mark Upton from Doosan Babcock; S.L. Lam of Hong Kong Electric, C.L. Lau of CLP; Dongmei Finch from Harbin Boiler Company Ltd.; and Jonathan Parker of EPRI.

ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin will be the keynote speaker at the second part of the event, the ISABTW Symposium on June 23. Loughlin’s presentation, “Priorities for Advancing Boiler Technology,” will provide attendees with a look at recent additions to ASME’s Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I, which highlight the Code’s new focus on the design and manufacture of power plants operating at high temperatures under cyclic loading conditions. Loughlin’s address will also offer some insight on the impact of trends in new materials, advanced manufacturing methods, new testing and inspection technologies, and the digital integration of control systems — all of which will have a substantial effect on innovations in boiler design. Loughlin’s keynote will be followed by the presentation, “A Comparison of the ASME and European Standards to Achieve Safe Boiler Operation,” by ASME Governor-elect Stuart Cameron.

The symposium will also feature 10 technical paper presentations covering topics including ASME and European standards for safe boiler operation; damage tolerance considerations for high energy components; advanced boiler design; boiler tube material selection; the application of advanced ultra-supercritical technology in China’s Fangchenggang power plant’s Phase II units; advanced boiler technologies in development at GE; and heat transfer restoration in and design and installation safety of heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs). Scheduled presenters include representatives from EPRI, GE Power Wuhan, Harbin Boiler Company, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Dongfang Electric Corp., CLP, and Hong Kong Electric, as well as Doosan Babcock and EMSD.

The workshop is also endorsed by the Hong Kong New Technology Training Scheme (NTTS). As such, those participants who are permanent residents of Hong Kong are eligible for a 50 percent subsidy on the registration fee. Please contact ISABTW NTTS Coordinator Victor Yu at victor.yu@clp.com.hk for details.

Registration forms for the symposium and workshop, which can be downloaded from the ISABTW website at www.asmehk.org/ISABTW, should be mailed by June 9 to the ASME Hong Kong Section, c/o Dr. Randolph Leung, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 11 Yuk Choi Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
