Entries for Young Engineer Paper Contest Due April 4

The ASME Fluids Engineering Division (FED) will sponsor the Young Engineer Paper (YEP) Contest to take place at the ASME 2017 International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE 2017) from Nov. 3 to 9 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla. The deadline to submit an abstract for the contest, which is open to undergraduates and recent grads, is April 4.

Undergraduates, engineers who received their bachelor’s degree after April 2016, and students who began their graduate studies after April 2016 are eligible to enter the competition. Up to five selected finalists will be invited to present their papers at a special session to be held at the IMECE 2017, where final judging and selection will take place.

The author of the paper chosen as winner of the contest’s first prize will receive $500. The authors of the second- and third-place papers will receive $300 and $200, respectively. Honorable mention awards of $100 will be presented to the remaining finalists. In addition, conference registration will be waived for one presenting author for each finalist paper, and travel expenses of up to $750 will be provided to the presenting author to help offset the costs of attending IMECE 2017.

Prospective competitors should submit an abstract of up to 500 words describing their research papers, which should focus primarily on a fluids engineering topic and can be the result of a project completed at a university or in industry. If their abstract is accepted, students will notified by April 11 and requested to submit a full-length paper of approximately 6,000 words by May 8. Those papers will be formally reviewed by the FED Young Engineer Paper Contest Committee based on technical merit, paper quality and adherence to the contest’s entry requirements. Finalists will be notified of their paper’s acceptance by June 19.

Based on the recommendations of the reviewing committee, YEP Contest finalists will have an opportunity to revise their papers prior to final submission. The revised final papers, incorporating reviewers’ comments and recommendations, will be published in the conference proceedings after they have been presented at IMECE.
