Eight Awards to be Presented During the President’s Luncheon at IMECE 2017

Eight Society awards — including the prestigious Soichiro Honda Medal, the Spirit of St. Louis Medal and the Henry R. Worthington Medal — will be presented next month during the President’s Luncheon at the ASME 2017 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Tampa, Fla. The President’s Luncheon will be held Monday, Nov. 6, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
John E. Dec, Ph.D., an ASME Fellow and a senior scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, Calif., will receive the Society’s Soichiro Honda Medal during the luncheon. The medal, which was established in 1983, recognizes an individual for an outstanding achievement or a series of significant engineering contributions in developing improvements in the field of personal transportation.
Dr. Dec, who has worked at Sandia’s Combustion Research Facility since 1989, is being honored for his outstanding contributions to automotive engineering through landmark research and publications on diesel combustion and homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion, which have advanced the understanding of combustion processes and significantly influenced internal combustion engine education and engine design. Dec has performed extensive research of the combustion processes in both diesel and low-temperature gasoline combustion (LTGC) engines at Sandia, and instituted an LTGC engine laboratory where he and his team have strived to better comprehend the fundamentals of LTGC and develop approaches for solving the challenges the technology can present.
ASME Fellow Charbel Farhat, Ph.D., the Vivian Church Hoff professor of aircraft structures, and chair of the aeronautics and astronautics department at Stanford University, will be presented the Spirit of St. Louis Medal at the luncheon. The medal, which was first awarded in 1929, honors meritorious service in the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics.
Dr. Farhat, who is also the director of the Army High Performance Computing Research Center at Stanford, is being recognized with the award for his sustained theoretical and computational research contributions in the broad field of fluid-structure interaction that have been applied to the solution of mission critical problems in aeronautical, automotive, marine, mechanical and naval engineering. A Fellow of five professional societies in addition to ASME, Farhat is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board.
Yu-Tai Lee, Ph.D., P.E., who recently retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Md., will receive the Henry R. Worthington Medal at the banquet. The medal, which was first awarded in 1980, honors eminent achievement in the field of pumping machinery.
Dr. Lee is being recognized for seminal contributions to the development of computational methods for the analysis and innovative design of U.S. Navy submarine propulsion pumps and shipboard turbomachinery; and for distinguished service to ASME including the mentoring of future naval engineers and conference newcomers. Currently the treasurer of the Fluids Engineering Division and member of the Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award Committee, Lee had previously held various positions within the Fluids Engineering Division, including chair, vice chair and secretary of the division and chair of the Fluids Engineering Award Committee.
Also receiving awards during the President’s Luncheon will be Luca Rivadossi, of RVD S.r.l. in Lumezzane, Italy, and Gian Paolo Beretta, Sc.D., of the University of Brescia in Italy, who will be presented with the Edward F. Obert Award for outstanding paper on thermodynamics; ASME Fellow Malcolm Crocker, Ph.D., of Auburn University, who will receive the Per Bruel Gold Medal for Noise Control and Acoustics; ASME Fellow Gershon Grossman, Sc.D., of Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, who will receive the Frank Kreith Energy Award; and Qiang Ma and Yihui Zhang, Ph.D., of Tsinghua University, who will both receive the Melville Medal, the highest ASME honor for best original paper.
