CSEF steels can provide higher efficiencies in power and process plants in high temperature services. However, they gain their exceptionally high temperature creep rupture properties based on a specific condition of microstructure, rather than the primary chemical composition of the materials, manufacturing and fabrication processes must be controlled very carefully to insure that the appropriate microstructure is achieved. Presented by leading industry experts in these steels who also participate in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel and Piping Codes, this course covers the proper use of CSEF steels such that adequate properties can be achieved and controlled.
You Will Learn
- History and background of CSEF Steels
- Metallurgy of Grade 91 and Other CSEF Steels
- Design Benefits
- Failure Histories
- Manufacturing and Fabrication
- Welding and PWHT (postweld heat treatment)
- Inspection and Assessment Approaches

Instructors
Philip D. Flenner, PE, has spent more than 35 years in welding qualifications and training, engineering training, power plant maintenance, and performance assessment. He has developed several guidelines on material control, repair methods, and the usage of Codes and Standards for the power industry. He participates significantly on several piping Codes, welding qualification Codes, and materials Codes for over 30 years, and has gained the honor of ASME Fellow during his career. He has taught multiple ASME Continuing Education Courses for over 20 years.
Jeff Henry has worked in the Power industry for more than 35 years, where his activities have focused on the elevated temperature behavior of materials, failure analysis, condition assessment, and welding metallurgy. Mr. Henry is active on several technical committees of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and is current chairman of BPV II as well as the chair of the Task Group on Creep Strength Enhanced Ferritic Steels.
