This two-day MasterClass provides the requirements for developing an integrity management program for gas pipelines using ASME B31.8S, which is the most widely used Code for managing pipeline integrity.  

The course explains how to develop and execute an Integrity Management Program (IMP).  It discusses the best practices for risk management systems, reviews integrity assessments and responses to integrity assessments, and the priority for repairs. It provides details and examples of alternative integrity assessment methods, as well as preventive and mitigation measures.

This course includes in-class exercises and its content complements the ASME B31.8 Code, which covers the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas distribution and transmission pipelines.  At the end of the course you will be able to develop and execute an IMP for gas pipelines.

 - Explain the guiding principles of pipeline safety and were IMP fits in a Safety Management System
 - Explain the components of the Integrity Management Process
 - Describe the process for developing an Integrity Management Program
 - Explain the requirements of standards for integrity management
 - Explain how High Consequence Areas (HCA) are defined and created
 - Describe integrity threats as outlined in B31.8S, including time dependent, time independent, resident and interactive.
 - Describe integrity assessment methods in B31.8S, such as the types of inline inspection (ILI) tools and their functions
 - Perform a risk assessment for an HCA
 - Explain prevention and mitigation responses outside of HCAs
 - Define Fitness-for-Service and describe how it is used in integrity management
 - Identify prevention and mitigation measures to reduce risk
 - Describe the additional elements in an integrity management program, including performance, communications, change management and quality control

Instructors

Keith Leewis Ph.D., PEng, of Leewis & Associates, brings over thirty five years of extensive and comprehensive experience in pipeline engineering, design, materials, operations, and integrity management, in the operations and engineering sectors of the energy industry. As a chief engineer he provides technical assessments that assist clients in achieving comprehensive and timely regulatory approvals. As an ASME B31.4 & B31.8 Executive committee member, he improves the international standards for the design and integrity management of natural gas pipelines, including the API & NACE standards that are related to integrity assessment.

Previously, Dr. Leewis was a tenured professor at the Technical University of Nova Scotia, Director of Technology at the Welding Institute of Canada, Project R&D Manager ? Pipeline Research Council International, Gas Technology Institute and Gas Research Institute, Senior Engineer at TransCanada Pipelines, and an R&D engineer Dominion Foundries and Steel Company. Dr Leewis has authored multiple articles and papers on pipeline-related subjects.
