A Beautiful Renewable Energy Generator
The founders of Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) sponsored a 2010 competition that challenged multidisciplinary teams of artists and engineers, among others, to create public art installations capable of generating clean energy. The winning design, Lunar Cubit, created by engineer-sculptor Robert Flottemesch and his collaborators, was announced on January 19, 2011 at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi.

Nuclear energy’s renaissance has always been driven by the need for clean, relatively inexpensive alternatives to fossil fuels. Today, portable nuclear electricity generators are poised to revolutionize power generation in both developed and developing nations. Success depends on optimizing key enabling technologies and devising appropriate commercial and regulatory frameworks.

Power plants waste a lot of fuel burning enough to be sure to meet demand, which changes from second to second. A new, and highly efficient, technology for frequency regulation has hit the scene. It’s a battery, and a big one. Using nanophosphates developed at MIT, A123 Systems has built a 20 Megawatt lithium ion battery soon to regulate frequency at a coal burning plant in Chile. The battery could potentially be a boon for solar and wind energy as well.
