How has the economy changed the world of scholarships? At Caltech it meant axing all merit-based scholarships. For the first time, administrators at the university are considering drawing scholarship funds from places other than their endowment. Caltech’s Director of Financial Aid, Don Crewell, explains how, thanks to the cuts, he no longer sleeps well at night. According to the National Science Board, women have earned 58% of all bachelor's degrees since 2002, but they represented only 17% of undergraduates in engineering programs in 2007, the most recent year available.
