Solar Decathlon Brightens Prospects for Solar Power

The recent demise of Solyndra, may have cast a shadow over the prospect of solar energy initiatives, but the 10-day Solar Decathlon 2011 now underway at the National Mall overlooking the Washington Monument is proving that the skepticism over the future of solar energy may be misplaced and short-lived.

Energy

The concept of energy is fundamental to mechanics and physics. Energy has three common forms: physical (including sound waves), thermodynamic/heat transfer, and mass transfer including radiation. Energy is essential for any useful work; any movement that overcomes inertia. Physicists classify energy as potential (such as gravity or stretched elastic) or kinetic, which is any object or mass in motion. Common measurements are ergs, calories, British Thermal Units, kilowatt hours, and joules.
