Introduction
In the event that a team cannot attend the appropriate District competition, teams may be invited to the Competition finals based upon a video entry procedure. Participation in the video competition is subject to approval by the Student Design Committee prior to the appropriate District competition. This document deals with the procedures for video submission, as well as criteria for determining the student team (or teams) who will be invited to participate in the “finals” of this competition at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE).
Overview
There are two phases to competing in the ASME Student Design Competition
First, there is a local competition. There are a number of competitions
held at local
Student Professional Development Conference locations in North
America and other ASME Districts around the world. Given the number of
students and teams who have participated in the past, there will be one competition
for students who are unable to participate at a “local” contest
and instead participate via video submission.
The second phase of the Student Design Competitions consists of an international final competition, wherein the local contest winners compete at ASME's International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE or "The Congress") which usually take place in November of each year.
Procedure for Choosing Student Winners in Video Competition
Each Student Section with one or more teams competing must perform the following three steps:
[1] Form a Local Selection Committee.
- A Local Judging Committee must be formed consisting of the Student Section Advisor and two to four ASME Members chosen from industries and universities. The help of the local “Senior” section of ASME may be enlisted in doing this.
[2] Conduct the Competition.
- The Local Judging Committee, with the aid of the Senior and Student Sections, will run a live competition for the Student Section following the "Recommended Guidelines for Conducting the Contest" to select the first, second and third place winners.
[3] Report the Results.
- The Student Section Advisor of the Student Section (or the Mechanical Engineering Department Chair, where no Student Section exists) must submit the video from the top three finishers to the Student Design Competition Committee. This should be submitted to ASME (contact information listed below). The videos must be accompanied by the official judge's score sheets from the competition and a cover letter, on institutional or ASME letterhead, signed by the Student Section Advisor attesting that all of the contest scoring and procedural rules were followed.
The first, second, and third place winners from each Student Section Competition must perform the following step:
[1] Demonstrate their Device.
- The top three winners will be required to prepare a video of no more than twenty minutes duration to explain clearly the principles on which their device operates and to show their device in action. The video must be submitted to the Selection Committee in a timely manner. See the Video Recommendations listed below.
Design Competition Video Recommendations
It is the responsibility of the student team to make sure that their video is clear and understandable. The video should be narrated; video recordings without sound or explanations will not be accepted for final judging at the SDC Committee level. A portion of this video must be an uninterrupted recording showing all setup and run times.
The video must be submitted online (via YouTube or other video hosting site) or in a CD in a format which can be viewed by “Real Player”, “Quick-Time”, or the Windows video player. Teams are responsible for insuring that their video can be viewed by one of these programs.
Student teams are encouraged to include at least the following items in their video:
- An introduction, identifying the Student Section, the team members, and the narrator. The narrator should be a team member except during those parts of the video showing the actual running of the device.
- A view showing the device packed in its “sizing box” as specified in the problem statement.
- A detailed explanation of the device, including close-up shots and shots from various directions
- The device completing the required run, once. All of the run must be shown; the reviewing committee will look at randomly selected part of the run to insure compliance with all rules.
- The final rating as described in the contest rules, announced and displayed.
- While the introductory portions of this video may be prepared at any time, the video of the team’s competition run must be made during the actual contest. This will require the simultaneous taping of contesting teams, so provision must be made to do this.
- It is the responsibility of the judging committee to make sure that the contest equipment meets problem specifications.
Registration and Submission Mailing Instructions
For inclusion in the judging for International Students:
- Participation in video contest is subject to approval by the Student Design Committee prior to the appropriate District competition. Teams must submit the SDC Letter of Intent to Enter by March 18, 2011.
- Video submissions must be sent by the team's Student Section Advisor or ME/MET Department Chair. Video submissions must be postmarked by June 3, 2011 and sent to:
