Through annual financial contributions and volunteer time and efforts, the Old Guard conducts the following programs for the benefit of engineering students and early career engineers, and ultimately for the good of the engineering profession:
The Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition
An engineer, like all professionals, must possess a well-developed ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. This competition is designed to emphasize the value of an ability to deliver oral presentations.
The Old Guard Video Presentation Competition
The Old Guard Video Presentation Competition is an exclusive program for ASME Districts and Student Members outside of North America. Like the original Old Guard Competition, this new program puts great emphasis on the value of an ability to deliver clear, concise and effective presentations to an audience, particularly pertaining to some sphere in which an engineer is or should be involved.
The Old Guard Technical Web Page Competition
This web page competition, held at district level Student Professional Development Conferences, is intended to encourage the delivery of visual presentations using web page technology. The subject matter is to be related to some area in the field of mechanical engineering.
The Old Guard Technical Poster Competition
This poster competition, held at North American District ASME Student Professional Development Conferences, is designed to emphasize the ability to deliver a visual presentation. Subject matter is to be related to some area in the field of mechanical engineering.
