With the acquisition of Biosphere 2, University of Arizona scientists wanted a facility where they could perform large-scale experiments on landscape evolution related to climate change. Allan Ortega is a structural engineer with M3 Engineering and Technology, a Tucson-based international multidiscipline firm, and lead structural engineer for Biosphere 2's Landscape Evolution Observatory. He talks about the challenges in designing facilities to meet strict high-performance scientific standards, in this case three steel structures to mimic hill slopes within an existing space frame building.
