ASME, to be able to respond to a rapidly changing global technological environment, has forward-looking advisory capacities in place to drive strategies and operations, such as:

• environmental scanning;
• best practices;
• annual prioritization; and
• Balanced Scorecard-driven planning and execution.

Programs include Innovative Technologies Institute, LLC; Communities of Practice, an online communications tool enabling engineers of like-minded interests and career pursuits to exchange information and ideas; and ASME Connections, a Website which includes commentary and case studies on new trends within the organization.  New initiatives that reflect the momentum of ASME's new strategies and objectives are highlighted on the people and new initiatives pages of ASME Connections.

ASME's strategic focus has five key market directions:

• Early Career Engineers – ASME is adapting its portfolio of services to fit the unique needs of engineers who are in the age group of 20 to 39.
• Industry – ASME has identified six industry sectors that represent new growth areas for members: pressure technology, energy, bio-pharmaceutical, waste management, homeland security and computer hardware and software. ASME is developing content around these sectors. ASME is seeking out working partnerships with major corporate customers through its ASME Solutions Initiative, a resource that provides industry-specific tools required for success in today's new and expanding global market.
• Government  - ASME continues to be a valuable resource for the agencies and departments of the U.S. government.
• Globalization  – ASME is developing a global market for its products and services.
• Future Markets– ASME is seeking ways to grow revenue through the creation of new programs and services.
