ASME Student Members

ASME undergraduate or graduate student members worldwide are eligible for academic scholarships, with total funding of $221,500 a year typically made possible through the ASME Foundation.

  • Unless noted, applicants must be an ASME student to login to the online application system. Click here to join ASME or to renew your membership.
  • Unless noted, applicants for ASME Scholarships only need to complete one online application, during the application acceptance period of January 6 to March 1 each year. Each application will be considered for all eligible scholarships for which the applicant fits the criteria.
  • Unless noted, applicants must be ASME student members in good standing at the time of application.
  • Most applicants must be enrolled in an ABET accredited or substantially equivalent mechanical engineering program. Incoming first-year graduate students must provide proof of acceptance to their graduate degree program.

Note for applicants from outside the United States:

Global indicates that the scholarship has no citizenship or geographic requirements.

A growing number of scholarships are available to students studying in the United States who are from other countries. Look for the Global designation in the description of the scholarships listed below. In addition:

  • Fulbright students from outside the United States who are in graduate studies are eligible to apply for the ASME Auxiliary-Rice Cullimore Scholarship.
  • Virginia Tech College of Engineering graduate students from outside the United States are eligible to apply for the ASME/Virginia Tech Memorial Scholarship.
  • Students studying in the United States, Mexico, or Canada are also eligible for student loans.

Most ASME Scholarships do not require that you study within the United States. If you are studying outside the United States, therefore, you do not need to have a VISA or VISA Residency status. On the online scholarship application, however, you will need to indicate that you are not studying within the United States: in the "VISA Residency" section, please enter "N/A" (for Not Applicable).

ABET Accreditation Equivalency: While you may not need to be studying within the United States to be eligible for many of the ASME Scholarships, you must be enrolled at an ABET-accredited (or equivalent) engineering degree program, or be studying at a university recognized by the Washington Accord countries, or one with an equivalent Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). (No further information about which institutes are accredited will be available by contacting ASME.)
