Technology Leaders List Three Provisions to Be Included in Higher Education Act

NEW YORK, March 5, 2008 – ASME has joined with other technology leaders in asking the U.S. Congress to support three key areas that could enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning in schools and place STEM in the forefront of the national debate on the future of higher education.

Joining other members of the STEM Education Coalition, ASME is urging the House and Senate Education Committee to direct resources to programs that enhance the instructional methods of teachers, create incentives to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM, and expand efforts to encourage diversity in the STEM pipeline.

“We believe that excellence in STEM education at all levels, among all populations, is vital to our nation’s long-term economic prosperity, global competitiveness and homeland security,” states the STEM Education Coalition.

The coalition is composed of a diverse range of organizations representing scientists, engineers, technicians, educators, and other professions.

“We hope you will consider the Higher Education Act as an opportunity to enhance and improve STEM education in the United States,” the coalition expressed to the House and Senate Education Committee.

Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization promoting the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences.  ASME develops codes and standards that enhance public safety, and provides lifelong learning and technical exchange opportunities benefiting the engineering and technology community.
