NEW YORK, Nov. 16, 2007 – A student team from the University of Nevada-Reno finished in first place in the 2007 ASME Student Design Competition Finals held Nov. 11 in Seattle.
In the collegiate competition, design teams from 13 colleges and universities were judged on the mechanical performance of small devices that combine a thermal heat transfer process and human pedal power to purify contaminated water. The University of Nevada entered the “Bicycle Boiler” in the competition, which ASME sponsors to showcase the technical ingenuity and problem-solving skills of young engineers.
Student teams from New Mexico State University and Arizona State University finished in second and third place, respectively.
The Boeing Company provided funding for the Student Design Competition, which was held in conjunction with the 2007 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Seattle.
