NEW YORK, Aug. 20, 2009 – A seminar on the newly revised ASME Y14.5 standard for geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) will take place on Oct. 8, 2009, at the Sheraton Salt Lake City in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The ASME-sponsored seminar aims to provide users of ASME Y14.5 with an overview of the principles of GD&T, as well as review the changes that the Society has incorporated into the current 2009 version of the popular standard.  ASME Y14.5-2009 includes important changes addressing the concept of feature design, datum references and degrees of freedom, surface boundaries and axis methods of interpretation, profile tolerances and symbology and modifiers tools.

GD&T is a universal design language that has been rigorously studied and applied by manufacturers around the world.  It is widely considered by mechanical engineers to be an essential tool for communicating design intent — that parts from technical drawings have the desired form, fit, function and interchangeability.

By providing uniformity in drawing specifications and interpretation, GD&T reduces guesswork throughout the manufacturing process — improving quality, lowering costs, and shortening deliveries.  ASME Y14.5-2009 has been fine-tuned with ease of use and readability in mind, including separate sections dedicated to profile, orientation and form.
