NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2008 – ASME will pay tribute to the engineering and scientific achievements of some of today’s leading engineers, educators, entrepreneurs and inventors. The ASME Honors Assembly, a gala event of the Society’s annual International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, will be held Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand, Liberty and Independence Ballrooms of the Sheraton Boston. The event is free and open to the general public.
The awards will recognize technical innovation and achievement, as well as dedicated service to the goals and programs of ASME. This multimedia program will showcase twelve of today’s leading innovators in industry and education. They include: Kenneth R Balkey, Technical Consultant, Pittsburgh, Pa. (Melvin R. Green Codes & Standards Medal); Kyriacos A. Athanasiou, Rice University, Houston, Texas (Thomas A. Edison Patent Award); Robin S. Sharp, University of Surrey, Guilford, United Kingdom (Soichiro Honda Medal); James B. Bryan, Technical Consultant, Pleasanton, Calif. (M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Medal of ASME/SME); Shirley Ann Jackson, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y. (Ralph Coats Roe Medal); Sia Nemat-Nasser, University of California, San Diego, Calif. (Timoshenko Medal); David G. Lilley, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla. (Holley Medal); Peter Maggiore, North Wind, Inc., Los Alamos, N.M. (Dixy Lee Ray Award); Klod Kokini, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. (ASME Johnson & Johnson Medal); Frank E. Talke, University of California, San Diego, Rancho Santa, Calif. (ASME Medalist); Nancy D. Fitzroy, retired from General Electric Co., Niskayuna, N.Y. (Honorary Member), and Robert A. Bennett (deceased), retired from Long Island Lighting Company (Honorary Member).
In addition to the Honors Assembly, the 2008 ASME Congress will include presentations on new advances in engineering. Experts will speak on aerospace technology, transportation, bioengineering, energy and the environment, and fluid mechanics, among other topics. The conference will continue to Nov. 6.
The ASME honors and awards program is funded through the ASME Foundation by individual awards and endowment funds. This year’s Honors Assembly will be hosted by ASME President Thomas M. Barlow and Chair of the Committee on Honors William W. Durgin.
