Human Powered Vehicles to Compete in 2009 ASME Engineering Competition

Drexel University -- April 17-19

NEW YORK, April 13, 2009 – Student engineering teams from Drexel University and Philadelphia University will compete against 25 other collegiate teams in the 2009 ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC)  beginning April 17.

Drexel will host the 3-day event, in which students put aerodynamically designed vehicles through speed and endurance tests on designated courses throughout the Drexel University campus.  The environmentally friendly pedal-powered prototypes also will be judged on maneuverability, practicality, and design efficiency.

Featuring names like Flying Badger and Black Widow, these super bikes incorporate engineering innovations allowing optimum performance and functionality, as well as structural soundness and safety.  The HPVC-East event will feature single-rider, multi-rider, and utility vehicles in a series of sprint, endurance, and skills competitions.  Event sponsor ASME will hold a similar west coast competition this May 1-3, in Portland, Ore.

The field of competitors for HPVC-East will include teams from Rutgers University, United States Naval Academy, University of Iowa, University of Central Florida, Arkansas State University, Grove City College, and Wright State University.  For a complete list of participating teams, event locations and schedules, visit the Web site, http://www.asme.org/Events/Contests/HPV/2009_HPVC_East_Drexel.cfm.

Judges will award cash prizes and trophies to the top teams in each category.  Special recognition will be given to teams that exhibit outstanding sportsmanship and team spirit.
