Annmarie Connor of United Space Alliance Named ASME New Face of Engineering

NEW YORK, Feb. 20, 2008 – ASME has selected Annmarie Connor of Orlando, Fla., to be honored among the New Faces of Engineering during Engineers Week 2008.

New Faces of Engineering is an international recognition program aimed at promoting the accomplishments and contributions of young engineers, two to five years removed from college graduation, while creating awareness of the impact that engineers have on daily life.

Connor, 28, is employed as a mechanical design engineer at United Space Alliance, Cape Canaveral, Fla.  Her work at the Kennedy Space Center supports design efforts for the Space Shuttle's orbiter and external tank ground support equipment.  Connor also serves as the systems design engineer for the Shuttle's orbiter access and multi-use ground handling equipment, where she leads and organizes design projects and research, prepares engineering analysis and drawings, and certifies modifications and new designs.

Connor attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where she received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering in 2002 and 2006, respectively.  She is an active member of ASME and also a member of the Society of Women Engineers.

Each year, nominations are submitted by the sponsoring societies and government agencies of Engineers Week to recognize outstanding engineering talent and achievement.  Engineers Week 2008 began on Feb. 18 and continues through Feb. 23.

Engineers Week is a formal coalition of more than 75 engineering, professional, and technical societies and more than 50 corporations and government agencies.  Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the program is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science.  Engineers Week also raises public understanding and appreciation of engineers’ contributions to society.

Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization promoting the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences.  ASME develops codes and standards that enhance public safety, and provides lifelong learning and technical exchange opportunities benefiting the engineering and technology community.
