Operations and Organization

Section Structure  (Arizona Section, over 14 years running, 2006) For Sections who have trouble staffing an Executive Committee and Operating Board, this summary provides a structure that fits the changes in engineering today. In addition, the Section Structure provides a system for maintaining an influx of new individuals and also a superb advisory capability for the Board. The Arizona Section has used this method of organization for the Section Executive Committee and Operating Board very successfully for many years. Other Sections were taught this technique to help them reorganize and assist them in building a strong governance structure capable of handling bigger and better programs. Through this structure, the Section will take on a new excitement and provide many new opportunities for the membership to be involved. >> more details

Pressure Vessels and Piping Division Annual Retreat (over 14,000 members) For technical divisions seeking efficacy in the division’s planning and review of finances and past activities, the PVP’s Annual Retreat is an outstanding event that brings together the executive committee and the active Senators to meet, review, and update the division plan. What separates this practice from others is that incoming members of the committee are trained and the strategic plan for the following year is the sole purpose of the meeting. This is a best practice because the training and planning achieved at these retreats result in high quality conference activities involving paper sessions, tutorials, software and NDE forums, student paper competitions and publications. >> more details

Pressure Vessels and Piping Division Senate (over 14,000 members) For divisions interested in a program that provides the executive committee historical knowledge and wisdom, the PVP Senate is a very successful program that provides guidance, training and assistance to the members of the executive committee. What separates this practice from others is that the experience and knowledge gained while in office is perpetuated through the Senate to plan and improve divisional functions.  This is a best practice because it helps to manage the many activities of the division, and provides “corporate memory”, which results in reducing the need for ASME staff support and expenses. >> more details

Pressure Vessels and Piping Division Executive Committee Terms and Training (over 14,000 members) For technical divisions interested in pulling together a succession plan for the volunteer leadership of the division, the PVP’s Executive Committee Terms and Training program is a highly successful program that has the incoming volunteers serve the division in various capacities over at least four years, thereby gaining experience while taking on leadership roles. What separates this practice from others is that it offers the opportunity to “learn as you perform” for volunteers interested in leadership positions. This is a best practice because experience as well as succession planning is key to excellent leadership. >> more details
