!!!! Check back with us in Early Fall 2009 for details on applying for the 2010-2011 cycle !!!!
ASME believes that early career engineers can make significant contributions to its various units and is eager to encourage their active participation in all levels of the Society. The Center for Leadership and Diversity’s Committee on Internship Programs reviews incoming applications for ECLIPSE positions and invites eligible ASME members to apply for participation in the program for future annual cycles.
ECLIPSE Goals:
- Placement of early career engineers in highly visible and productive roles within the ASME organization.
- Mentoring by high-level ASME volunteers.
- Significant contributions by early career engineers to sectors/boards/committees.
- Continuing leadership training and volunteer tracking.
- Shared vision between Committee on Internship Programs and sponsoring units.
Who is eligible?
- Members who have served 3-10 years in the workforce.
- Members who have not previously served as an LDI or MLP intern.
ECLIPSE is a competitive internship program. Following the application process (in January), candidates will be notified of the disposition of their applications by late February. ECLIPSE participants are matched with a specific ASME unit for a period of one year and work closely with an assigned mentor to complete one or more projects throughout the year. Internships commence at the Summer Annual Meeting (SAM) with an Early Career Leadership session. Interns also attend the International ME Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in November, as well as training at the Leadership Training Conference. At the conclusion of the internship period, ECLIPSE participants are assisted in identifying opportunities for continued participation in ASME.
Participation in ECLIPSE is open to any ASME member who has served at least three and no more than ten years in the workforce since completion of an engineering degree. ASME members who have served as Leadership Development Interns (LDIs) or Minority Leadership Program (MLP) interns are not eligible to participate in ECLIPSE. Previous LDIs and MLPs are invited to serve on the Committee on Internship Programs, serve as advocates for additional placements for ECLIPSE participants or as mentors in the program.
Interns will attend several meetings of approximately three days’ duration during the internship period. The cost of attending those meeting will be partially covered by ASME in accordance with Society Policy P-4.5: reasonable transportation costs to attend pre-approved meetings are eligible for reimbursement, as are lodging and meal expenses up to a $150 per day per diem (except as noted in Society Policy P-4.5) All expense reimbursements are subject to budget limitations. ASME encourages cost sharing of these expenses with the interns’ employers.
