THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE – AN ASSIGNMENT OF HIGH TRUST
The Nominating Committee is charged with the responsibility of nominating members of experience, high standing, and active participation in the work of the Society to those offices specified in Article C4.1.8 of the Constitution. These nominees may be selected from proposals by various units or by individual members in the Society or from the Nominating Committee's own deliberations as it sees fit.
This Committee is made up of volunteers that are Voting Members and Alternates. Each Nominating Committee member must be a Member or Fellow grade and not currently serving in any elective office of the society. Nominating Committee members are selected from each Sector Board. At the second Business Meeting of the fiscal year (normally held in June), the President shall present the names of those recommended pursuant to By-Law B4.2.2.3, as applicable, for election to the Nominating Committee. The voting members of the Nominating Committee shall be elected for two years and alternates for one year. Each year the Nominating Committee is assisted by a non voting group of Advisors consisting of three consenting and available past Presidents who have been out of office for one year or more and two consultants, the immediate Past Chair and Past Secretary of the Nominating Committee. These Advisors and Consultants attend all meetings and participate fully in all discussions, although they will maintain impartiality and do not state their opinions regarding any particular proposed nominee.
The Nominating Committee looks for members that have a broad record of volunteer-leadership, thorough knowledge of the Society, and a commitment to the goals and requirements of the Nominating Committee. Members should have a thorough understanding of current responsibilities, operation and challenges of their Board and the Sector they are representing. They must also understand how these same issues relate to the Society as a whole. The Nominating Committee Member should have a reasonably good understanding of the history of their Sector and Units, their Board and the Society and be able to use this knowledge to effectively assess the qualifications of proposed nominees for officers of ASME.
Both Voting and Alternate Members are encouraged to attend all meetings and subcommittee meetings throughout the year. All meetings except the June Selection Meeting are via Web conference or Teleconference.
Past and present Nominating Committee members have valued the opportunity to meet members from other ASME divisions and sectors. They enjoyed hearing the ideas and values from the up-and-coming members of our Society. Participation on the Nominating Committee has been a valuable educational experience for many members, both old and new, and has helped them better understand the structure and operations of ASME. Due to this positive impact, after their commitments to the Nominating Committee, members run for office. Past members of the Committee currently hold Society Officer Positions. In addition to Society Officers, Nominating Committee members have also been recipients of various ASME Honors and Awards. It has been stated that Committee members, as well as the advisors and consultants, are all respectable, ethical, and inspirational as are the candidates running for office. Nominating Committee members are very dedicated to their responsibilities and feel being a member of the Nominating Committee has been one of the better experiences in their ASME volunteerism.
