ASME Student Sections Competition

Introduction
This contest is sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).  Through its financial support ASME is demonstrating its interest in, and dependency on, professional engineering talent. ASME further believes that one of the proper vehicles for development of engineering students into a total professional is through membership and participation in the student section of their engineering society.

The contest was first held during the 1962-1963 academic year, and through 1983-1984 was known as the Bendix Contest because it was financially sponsored by the Bendix Corporation. The Bendix Corporation was subsequently acquired by the Allied Corporation and the name was changed to the Allied Contest. In 1985 Allied Corporation merged with Signal Corporation; the name was changed to the AlliedSignal contest. In 1999 Ingersoll-Rand became the sponsor, and sponsored the contest until 2006.  In 2007 ASME took over the sponsorship of the contest thus renaming it the ASME Student Sections Competition.

The fundamental purpose of the ASME Student Sections Contest is to encourage engineering students to be total professionals by participating in technical events that expand on their academic pursuits, by building character toward good citizenship, and by learning more about real world engineering. It recognizes those student sections that show outstanding achievement in the manner by which they conduct their affairs. A comprehensive set of variables is considered when evaluating student section effectiveness. Each variable is weighted, and the strength of a section is determined by the total number of points accumulated. A good section is one that exhibits a wide diversity of activities.

The rules and procedures for the contest are under the jurisdiction of the Student Sections Committee (SSC).  Suggestions for improvements in or questions about the Student Section Contest should be directed to the SSC through the senior or student SSC representative of your district.
